Gong Hwang-cherng (traditional Chinese:龔煌城;simplified Chinese:龚煌城;pinyin:Gōng Huángchéng) (1934–2010) was a Taiwaneselinguist who specialized inSino-Tibetan comparative linguistics and the phonetic reconstruction ofTangut andOld Chinese.
He was born on 10 December 1934 atYunlin County in Taiwan, and graduated fromNational Taiwan Normal University in 1958 with a degree inEnglish.[1] He earned his PhD in 1975 fromLudwig Maximilian University of Munich inGermany, and was a research fellow and later professor atAcademia Sinica in Taiwan.[2][3] He was elected an honorary member of theLinguistic Society of America in 2001, and an academician ofAcademia Sinica in 2002.[4] In 2006, he received a life achievement award from theLinguistic Society of Taiwan.
