GNOME Software is a utility for installing applications and updates onLinux. It is part of theGNOME Core Applications, and was introduced in GNOME 3.10.[3][4]
It is theGNOME front-end to thePackageKit, in turn a front-end to severalpackage management systems, which include systems based on bothRPM andDEB.
The program is used to add and managesoftware repositories as well asUbuntuPersonal Package Archives (PPA). Ubuntu replaced its previousUbuntu Software Center program with GNOME Software starting withUbuntu 16.04 LTS,[6] and re-branded it as "Ubuntu Software".
It also supportsfwupd for servicing of system firmware.[7]
GNOME Software supports automatic updates for Flatpak applications and for system packages/updates since GNOME 3.30 in 2018. Users can control whether Flatpak updates are automatically downloaded and installed.[8]
GNOME Software removedSnap support in July 2019, due to code quality issues, lack of integration (specifically, the user can't tell what snap is doing after they click "install" and that it generally ignores GNOME's settings), and the fact that it competes with the GNOME-supportedFlatpak standard.[9]
