Edmund William Gilbert (1900–1973) was a British social geographer. He was Professor of Geography at theUniversity of Oxford, from 1953 to 1967.[1]and Fellow ofHertford College, Oxford. He definedgeography in terms of the recognition of the characters ofregions[2]

In the 1920s, while atReading University, he studied theAmerican West.[3] He was much influenced byHalford Mackinder, to the point of being thought an uncritical admirer.[4]

DuringWorld War II he worked on theNaval Intelligence Handbooks, producing, withRobert Beckinsale[5] and S. da Sá, theSpain and Portugal volumes.

He studied atSt Peter's School, York[6]
