TheChurch ofAlexandria inEgypt was theChristian Church headed by thepatriarch of Alexandria. It was one of the five sees of thepentarchy, alongsideRome,Antioch,Constantinople andJerusalem.
Tradition holds that the Church of Alexandria was founded bySaint Mark the Evangelist[1] circa 49 AD and claims jurisdiction over all Christians on theAfrican continent.
Today, three churches claim to be direct heirs of the original Church of Alexandria:
- TheCoptic Orthodox Church, anOriental Orthodox church
- TheGreek Orthodox Church of Alexandria, part of the widerEastern Orthodox Church
- TheCoptic Catholic Church, one of 23Eastern Catholic churches who are in full communion with theCatholic Church led by thebishop of Rome
Formerly theLatin Patriarchate of Alexandria also did so.
