Carey Hall Cash[1] is aUnited States NavyRear Admiral andchaplain who serves as the 21stChaplain of the United States Marine Corps and Deputy Chief of Chaplains of theUnited States Navy since May 2022. An ordained minister, Cash served in multiple positions as amilitary chaplain, including as the command chaplain toUSS San Jacinto,USS John C. Stennis, andCarrier Strike Group 3, as well as chaplain to formerPresidentBarack Obama atCamp David, the U.S. presidential retreat.[2]
Cash was born inMemphis, Tennessee, to a religious family. His father, Roy Cash Jr., was afighter pilot in the Navy for 30 years. His mother, Billie, runs a Christian ministry and is the author of several books about her faith. His older sister,Kellye Cash, wasMiss America 1987.
Cash attendedThe Citadel inSouth Carolina andSouthwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is thegreat-nephew of the singerJohnny Cash.
Lt. Cash served on thebattlefield during the2003 invasion of Iraq. He baptized more than fifty men during the war.[citation needed] In addition, he served as Senior Protestant Chaplain at theUnited States Naval Academy inAnnapolis, Maryland, where he served midshipmen of all faiths with distinction and received Navy citations for his work.
