Bainobaudes (c. 320 - 357 AD) was aRoman soldier ofFrank ancestry who served under emperorsConstantius II andJulian.[1]Bainobaudes was tribune of thescola Scutatiorum under theCaesar Julian during his campaigns against theAlamanni inGaul.[2] During a pincer movement led by Julian and the generalBarbatio, a band of Alamanni slipped past them and attackedLugdunum (Lyon). Julian sent the tribunesValentinian (the future emperor) and Bainobaudes to watch the road the raiders would have to return by. However, their efforts were hindered by Barbatio and his tribuneCella. The Alamann kingChnodomarius took advantage of the situation and attacked the Romans in detail, inflicting heavy losses.[2] Barbatio complained to Constantius and the debacle was blamed on Bainobaudes and Valentinian, who were cashiered from the army.[2] However, Bainobaudes' position was soon rehabilitated and he was made tribune of theCornuti. Bainobaudes was killed during theBattle of Argentoratum, a decisive Roman victory against the Alamanni.[1]
