Aoi-ku (葵区,Aoi-ku) is one of threewards ofthe city of Shizuoka inShizuoka Prefecture,Japan, located in the northern part of the city. Aoi-ku bordersSuruga-ku in the south andShimizu-ku to the southeast; the west facesShimada,Fujieda andKawanehon and its northern tip extends into the border betweenNagano Prefecture andYamanashi Prefecture. It is the largest ward in Japan in terms of geographic area.[citation needed]

Aoi-ku was created on April 1, 2003, when Shizuoka became acity designated by government ordinance (a "designated city"). It consists of the area of Shizuoka prior to its merger withShimizu, north of theTōkaidō Main Line rail tracks.
The ward is home to both the Shizuoka city offices as well as theShizuoka prefectural offices.

editAoi-ku has a climate characterized by hot and humid summers, and relatively mild winters (Köppen climate classificationCfa). The average annual temperature in Aoi-ku is 11.6 °C (52.9 °F). The average annual rainfall is 3,258.6 mm (128.29 in) with September as the wettest month. The temperatures are highest on average in August, at around 22.4 °C (72.3 °F), and lowest in January, at around 1.2 °C (34.2 °F).[1]
