Zanthoxylum acanthopodium, orandaliman, is a species of flowering plant in the familyRutaceae. Its range includes southern westernChina (Guangxi,Guizhou,Sichuan,Tibet, andYunnan),Bangladesh,Bhutan, northernIndia and northeastern India (Arunachal Pradesh,Assam,Manipur,Meghalaya,Mizoram,Nagaland,Sikkim,Uttar Pradesh, andWest Bengal),Nepal,Laos,Burma,northern Thailand,Vietnam,Indonesia (northernSumatran highlands), andPeninsular Malaysia.[1]

Much like the closely relatedSichuan pepper (Z. bungeanum), the seed pericarps are used as spices in cooking and have a similar tongue-numbing characteristic. However, in cooking, the flavour of andaliman has lemon-like notes (similar to those oflemon-grass) as well as a hint of thearomatic pandan leaf.
