Alexa Davalos Dunas (born May 28, 1982[1]) is an American actress. Her early role asGwen Raiden on thefourth season of the TV seriesAngel (2002–03) was followed by other television roles and some Hollywood films, includingThe Chronicles of Riddick (2004) andDefiance (2008). In the late 2010s, she starred as Juliana Crain, the main character in theAmazon Studios seriesThe Man in the High Castle. She also played Special Agent Kristin Gaines in theCBS drama seriesFBI: Most Wanted (2021–2023).

Early life
editDavalos was born in Paris, France to American parents, photographerJeff Dunas and actressElyssa Davalos, granddaughter of actorRichard Davalos. Davalos spent most of her childhood in France and Italy, before settling in New York.[2] She has stated "I tend to curse in French more often than I do in English."[3]
She is of Spanish and Finnish descent on her mother's side.[4] Her father's family is Jewish (her paternal ancestors lived inVilnius in Lithuania).[5] She was raised "without much religion", though she attendedHebrew school for a time.[6]
Davalos struck out on her own at seventeen and moved toNew York City. She supported herself by modeling for photographers likePeter Lindbergh. "I had a mission," she recalls. "I wanted to be out in the world, doing my own thing. Working in a theatre, I discovered that I really wanted to act."[3] Her passion soon grew towards acting, and she attended theOff-BroadwayFlea Theater in New York.[3] She kept her acting plans from her family until her career started to take off.[7]
Career
editIn 2002, Davalos co-starred withCharlie Hofheimer in theshort filmThe Ghost of F. Scott Fitzgerald, which screened at the 2002Toronto International Film Festival.[8] She appeared as the superhumanGwen Raiden in the television seriesAngel for three episodes,[1] with which she nevertheless attracted attention.[9] In September 2003, she was seen oppositeAntonio Banderas in theHBO filmAnd Starring Pancho Villa as Himself. Davalos' breakthrough was in the 2004 science fiction filmThe Chronicles of Riddick,[5] where she also made herfeature film debut.
Davalos continued to act in Hollywood films.[10] In 2007, she was featured in the romantic dramaFeast of Love, which starredGreg Kinnear andMorgan Freeman.[11] She also played Sally inThe Mist (directed byFrank Darabont), co-starringThomas Jane,Laurie Holden andMarcia Gay Harden. In 2008, Davalos co-starred as the love interest ofDaniel Craig in the war filmDefiance, directed byEdward Zwick. Her performance was praised by critics.[10] Davalos playedAndromeda in the remake ofClash of the Titans, alongsideSam Worthington,Ralph Fiennes andLiam Neeson.[12] The film received poor reviews but was a financial success.[13] She did not return for the 2012 sequel,Wrath of the Titans, due to a scheduling conflict.[14]
In addition to her film roles, she also continued to appear in television series, includingReunion (2005–2006) andMob City (2013).[13] In the latter, she played the female lead and reunited again with Frank Darabont.[15] However, these television series were short-lived.[13] In 2015, Davalos started acting inThe Man in the High Castle (2015–2019), anAmazon Studios series based on thePhilip K. Dicknovel of the same name. Starring as Juliana Crane, the main character of the series, she played the biggest role of her career up to that point. She then made a brief appearance inThe Punisher, along with starJon Bernthal;[16] both of whom were also inMob City. In the early 2020s, Davalos had a regular role in two seasons of theCBS crime seriesFBI: Most Wanted as Special Agent Kristin Gaines.[17]
Personal life
editDavalos is a close friend of actressesAmanda Righetti andChyler Leigh, and was Righetti's bridesmaid at her wedding.[18] Davalos considers herself to be a "dork" and loves to travel and read.[19] She guards her private life stating, "I think it's a choice. I think it's a conscious choice, and what you allow to affect you and what you don't."[citation needed]
Davalos married actorJosh Stewart on May 19, 2019.[20][21] Both were costars on the second season of the Netflix seriesThe Punisher.[citation needed]
