Acilia is a neighborhood and afrazione ofRome,Italy, located about half- way between Rome andOstia, along theVia Ostiense. With a population 66,932 in 2008 it is the third largest Italianfrazione after Ostia andMestre.

History
editThe name remembers the Roman family of theAcilii, which during the Roman age owned their estates here.
In the years aroundWorld War I the zone, once plagued bymalaria, was reclaimed.The first modern settlements took place during the 1920s, but only the opening of theVia del mare and of the railway between Rome and Ostia boosted the development of the area.
In 1940 Italian dictatorBenito Mussolini inaugurated a settlement designed by the engineerDario Pater. Here were hosted many inhabitants coming fromBorgo, which had lost their homes because of the demolition of thespina.
Today Acilia belongs to theX Municipio, the part of Rome that overlooks theTyrrhenian Sea.
Transport
editAcilia is served by a railway station on the suburban lineRome-Lido. Roman terminal of this line is atRoma Porta San Paolo station, very close toPiramide stop (Rome Metro,Line B) and not too far from the station ofRoma Ostiense.
Education
editThere is a public library in Acilia, Sandro Onofri.[1]
Notable people
