To bolster her credentials in her strong conservative base, Sharron Angle, a Republican, shaped her candidacy for the Senate along a few lines of attack — against big government, against high taxes and against illegal immigration. Her economic message resonated across party lines, but was particularly effective among independents, most of whom voted for her over the Democratic incumbent, Senator Harry Reid, according to exit polls.

Ms. Angle’s approach to immigration, though, drove a wedge in the electorate, not just alienating Latino voters, but possibly pushing a lot of them to vote for Mr. Reid. Latinos accounted for 15 percent of the overall vote in Nevada, and, based on exit polls, two-thirds of Latinos cast ballots for Mr. Reid, who beat Ms. Angle by a five-point margin.

From the start, Ms. Angle took a hard line on border security, running ads portraying Latinos — though not explicitly naming them — as menacing invaders. She also repeatedly expressed her support of Arizona’s controversial immigration law.

Mr. Reid’s campaign, meanwhile, led a big push over the summer to register thousands of Latino voters. And he gained the endorsement of the state’s influential hospitality and gaming unions, where half of the membership is Latino.

A recent poll by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and Brookings Mountain West, an arm of the Brookings Institution in Washington, showed that a plurality of Latinos in Nevada had a favorable view of the state’s Democratic legislators. Prof. John Tuman, chairman of the University of Nevada’s political science department, noted that while illegal immigration did not resonate as a particularly salient issue for Latinos in Nevada, immigration reform did. Mr. Reid sought to capitalize on that, stressing his support of immigration legislation, but also promoting President Obama’s economic recovery measures, particularly in the housing sector, which employs many Latinos.

“When Republicans run a very negative campaign on immigration, Latinos feel targeted, threatened, and that will push them to vote for a Democrat,” Professor Tuman said.

The state elected a Latino governor, Brian Sandoval, a Republican. Mr. Sandoval beat the incumbent, Jim Gibbons, for the party nomination and then Mr. Reid’s son Rory Reid, a Democrat, on Tuesday.

Two incumbents — a Republican and a Democrat — won re-election for Congress, while a third, Dina Titus, a Democrat, lost her seat to Joe Heck, a Republican who ran with Tea Party support.
