ΟNGC 4318 είναι μικρόςφακοειδής γαλαξίας[3] ο οποίος απέχει περίπου 72 εκατομμύριαέτη φωτός[5] και βρίσκεται στοναστερισμόΠαρθένο. Τον ανακάλυψε οαστρονόμοςΤζον Χέρσελ (John Herschel) στις 18 Ιανουαρίου 1828.[6] Ανήκει στηνΟμάδα γαλαξιών Παρθένου W′,[2][7][8][9] που βρίσκεται στο υπόβαθρο τουΣμήνους γαλαξιών της Παρθένου.[2] Σημαντικότερο μέλος της ομάδας W′ είναι ο γιγάντιοςελλειπτικός γαλαξίαςNGC 4365.[9]

Φυσικά χαρακτηριστικά

Ο NGC 4318 έχει μικρό[3] κλασικόεξόγκωμα[10] και στον πυρήνα του υπάρχει αστρικός δίσκος διαμέτρου περίπου 70 ετών φωτός.[11] Έξω από τον αστρικό δίσκο υπάρχει σαφώς ορισμένη περιοχή χαμηλής επιφανειακής φωτεινότητας διαμέτρου περίπου 230 ετών φωτός η οποία περιβάλεται από μεγαλύτερο εξωτερικό δίσκο.[3][12]

Στο εσωτερικό του NGC 4318 υπάρχει υπερμαζικήμελανή οπή της οποίας η μάζα εκτιμάται σε τέσσερα εκατομμύριαηλιακές μάζες.[13][14][15] Επίσης ο γαλαξίας περιβάλλεται από δεκαοκτώσφαιρωτά αστρικά σμήνη.[16][17]
