EISCAT Joins RI-SCALE: A new EU-funded Project Unlocking RI Potential with Scalable AI and Data

EISCAT is proud to be part of the newly launchedRI-SCALE project, an EU-funded project that brings together 29 partners across Europe to tackle challenges in research data exploitation. Coordinated by theEGI Foundation, the project officially started onMarch 1, 2025, and will run untilFebruary 2028. RI-SCALE aims to develop cutting-edgeData Exploitation Platforms (DEPs) to enhance the accessibility, usability, and impact of research data across multiple scientific domains.

Kickoff Meeting in Amsterdam

The project was officially launched during aKickoff Meeting at Amsterdam Science Park from March 11 to 13, 2025. This gathering marks the beginning of a collaborative effort to co-design and validateAI-ready platforms, integrating advanceddata analytics, machine learning models, and scalable computational frameworks to unlock the full potential of research infrastructures’ datasets.

Our Contribution to RI-SCALE

As a key partner in the project, EISCAT will contribute to integrating data with cloud and HPC infrastructures. Our expertise in near-Earth space observations and our repository of incoherent scatter radar data from more than 40 years, toghether with our collaborators’ expertise in machine learning methods and computing infrastructures will play a crucial role in ensuring the success of this project. Through our participation, we aim to enhance collaboration with European RIs to drive innovation in research data management and advance AI integration in research infrastructures.

Why RI-SCALE Matters

The ability to extract value from big data is becoming increasingly important as Research Infrastructures (RIs) generate ever-growing datasets. However, barriers such as limited computational resources and interoperability challenges hinder their reuse and impact. RI-SCALE’s Data Exploitation Platforms will bridge this gap, offering scalable, AI-ready solutions that will empower researchers to conduct transformative studies in fields such as climate science, atmospheric physics, biobanking, and biomedical imaging.
