Chemicals are everywhere, but not all are safe. Companies must prove how their chemicals can be used safely and provide this information to authorities. Together with EU countries, we review this data to identify potentially harmful chemicals and provide scientific opinions on how to manage their risks, such as restricting their use or requiring prior approval.
Our opinions go to the European Commission and EU countries for their final decision.
We handle various tasks to put EU chemicals laws into action. These include:
- Implementing EU chemicals laws through technical, scientific, and administrative tasks.
- Delivering independent, high-quality scientific opinions to guide EU actions.
- Collaborating with EU institutions, member states, and other bodies – also globally.
- Supporting companies, especially SMEs, in meeting chemical legislation duties.
- Ensuring the public and stakeholders get relevant, reliable, and objective information.

We assess chemicals that can cause effects such as allergies, disruption to our hormones or more severe illnesses such as cancer. Our work includes preparing scientific opinions on restricting the use of harmful chemicals or proposing measures to ensure they can be used safely.

We give scientific opinions on limiting the use of chemicals to stop them causing unacceptable environmental risks. For example, restricting microplastics, PFAS and lead used in outdoor shooting and fishing.
