How we work

About us - how we work - landing

ECHA was established in 2007 to manage the technical, scientific and administrative aspects of the EU’s ambitious chemicals regulation, REACH. REACH was set up to collect information on the chemicals on the EU market and identify and regulate harmful ones so that they can be replaced or used safely.

Since then, we have become the EU’s chemicals agency, tasked with many more pieces of legislation and tasks that fit our expertise. For example, the regulation of biocidal products, the import and export of hazardous chemicals and the assessment of substances coming into contact with drinking water.

To do our work, we rely on staff with both administrative and scientific expertise. Our administrative staff manage the daily operations and develop the processes we need to carry out our work. Our scientists ensure that we can thoroughly assess the information on chemicals we receive and give the scientific foundation for our work.

Scientific opinions for decision-making

The core of our scientific work is carried out by our formal bodies and networks, especially ourscientific committees. These committees are made up of members from EU countries, experts from various fields and observers from our partner organisations like the European Commission and EU-level industry and civil society.
