Emigration to the USA
*A lthough there is an increase in foreign exchange receipts, the contribution of tourism is reduced because emigration was growing. Since unemployment was a chronic structural problem of the Greek economy emigration functioned as a safety valve. In 1956, emigration was covering 71% of the natural demographic growth of the working population.°*” Tourism revenues and the share in GDP is based on official figures. However, it should be noted that local consumption is not taken into account, nor other types of inputs. Real contribution is, therefore, considerably higher.
