Future Boy Conan (未来少年コナン,Mirai Shōnen Konan) is an anime that premiered in Japan in 1978, being broadcast between April 4 and October 31 of the that same year by NHK. This series was directed by Hayao Miyazaki, the current director of Studio Ghibli. The series consists of a single season that contains 26 episodes of approximately 30 minutes each.

It has been regularly broadcast across Japan on the anime satellite television network Animax, who have also translated and dubbed the series into English for broadcast across its respective English-language networks in Southeast Asia and South Asia.

On July 8, 2021, it was announced GKIDS picked up the distribution rights for Future Boy Conan and would be releasing the anime in North America. The anime was restored in 4K resolution and had a new English dub recorded in Vancouver.[1] The dub was released on November 16, 2021.

Synopsis

The story takes place in the 21st century, 20 years after World War 3. The world as we know it has been destroyed, and 12 year old Conan lives on an island with his grandfather, believing they are the only two survivors of the war. But one day Conan discovers an unconscious girl on the beach. She is 11 year old Lana, and she's fleeing from the evil rulers of Industria, who want to kidnap her and use her as a bait to convince her grandfather (who has fled from Industria himself) to give up the lost secret of solar energy, which would allow Industria to rule over the world. After Lana is kidnapped from the island, Conan decides to rescue her and sets sail to Industria.

  • A test dub of episode 23 was made by Intersound, Inc. in the United States in the early 1980's. The dub was produced bySteve Kramer, while the English script was written by Bob Barron. Two clips of the dub can be seen on theConan Digital Library game for the Panasonic Japan 3DO. The clips featureTony Oliver as the voice of Conan, andMike Reynolds as the voice of Captain Dyce. The dub was never released for unknown reasons, though it's long rumored that it was a cease-and-desist order from the estate of Alexander Key that caused it to be scrapped. It was also rumored Streamline Pictures attempted to distribute the series, but similar reasons halted them from doing so. The two clips from theConan Digital Library game are the only clips of the Intersound dub that have surfaced online.[2]
