Researching Women's Football
ABSTRACT
This chapter develops the themes of voice and nostalgia. This thematic overview is a context which reflects on national sporting culture as transitional to examine normative discourse of femininity and masculinity performed and practised in football. This chapter is split into three parts. The first part of the chapter examines place, the body and physicality, and the emergent football in culture in England. The second part considers the origins and emergence of a peculiarly ‘English’ football culture, examines the relationship between national identity and masculinity with origins public school football, and extends a legacy of nostalgia into the contemporary game. The third part reflects on ‘voice’, a concept with which the sociologist may understand how women’s football poses challenges and contestation to normative gendered identities. This chapter puts forward the view that women’s football is a space for reconfiguration and change.
