Abstract
Shared-use paths have become a common feature of active transportation networks. These off-street, multimodal facilities are designed to support a variety of non-motorized users, from pedestrians and cyclists to wheelchair users, in-line skaters, and more. This state-of-the-art review (n=62) highlights a growing awareness of the complex spatial and operational needs of diverse users yet also points to shortcomings in how experiential qualities such as comfort, perceived safety, and conflicts are measured. While level-of-service (LOS) frameworks remain the dominant performance metric, they inadequately reflect the lived experiences of users. Sustainability, although frequently identified as a benefit of shared-use paths, is rarely evaluated through robust, systematic frameworks. Jurisdictional comparisons reveal considerable variation in design standards and regulatory frameworks, influencing the degree to which accessibility and sustainability are prioritized. As shared-use path networks continue to expand, addressing these gaps will be critical for advancing inclusive, sustainable, and evidence-based active transportation infrastructure.
