    Abstract

    This paper examines the complex evidence for the use of Greek on the one hand and Syriac on the other by the controversial fifth-century bishop of Edessa, Hibas, and by contemporaries involved with him. The material derives from the fifth and sixth centuries, and is preserved in Syriac, Greek and Latin. A prominent place is given to the letter of Hibas addressed to “Mari the Persian”, written in Syriac, and preserved in a Syriac codex copied in 535 which contains a selective translation of some of the Acts of the Second Council of Ephesus of 449. A facsimile of the first page of this text is provided, along with a complete text in the original Estrangela script, set out in the columns and lines of the original. It is not certain, however, whether this is the original text or a re-translation from the Greek. Hibas’ composition of this letter, and his translation into Syriac, and distribution, of some theological texts, must however be seen against the background both of his use of written Greek in correspondence and of spoken Greek at proceedings in 448 and 449 and at the Council of Chalcedon of 451. The role of Syriac in the fifth century Church was a novel and significant development. But Greek remained the predominant language.

    Cet article examine un dossier complexe : les attestations de l’usage du grec, d’une part, et du syriaque, de l’autre, chez Hibas, l’évêque controversé d’Édesse au Ves., ainsi que chez ses interlocuteurs. Les sources proviennent des Veet VIes. et sont rédigées en syriaque, en grec et en latin. Une place particulière est réservée à la lettre de Hibas adressée à « Mari le Perse », écrite en syriaque et conservée dans un manuscrit syriaque copié en 535, qui contient un choix de traductions des Actes du second concile d’Éphèse de 449. On propose un fac-similé de la première page de ce texte, accompagné de la totalité du texte dans son écriture estrangelo d’origine, reproduisant la mise en page, colonnes et lignes de l’original. Ce qui toutefois n’est pas clairement établi, c’est s’il s’agit du texte original, ou d’une retraduction du grec. La composition de cette lettre par Hibas, sa traduction en syriaque et la diffusion de certains textes théologiques doivent être replacées dans le contexte de son utilisation du grec écrit pour sa correspondance et du grec parlé lors des assemblées de 448 et 449 ainsi qu’au concile de Chalcédoine de 451. Le rôle du syriaque dans l’Église du Ves. connaissait une évolution nouvelle et importante. Cependant le grec restait la langue dominante.
