Abstract

Phylogenetic studies ofAgave Linnaeus (1753: 323) and related genera (Asparagaceae, Agavoideae) thus far published were based either on molecular (Bogler & Simpson 1996; Bogleret al. 2006; Good-Ávilaet al. 2006; Scheinvaret al.2017) or on morphological data (Hernández-Sandoval 1995; Tambutti in Eguiarteet al. 2006). Most studies showed that the generaManfredaSalisbury (1866: 78),PolianthesLinnaeus(1753: 316) andProchnyanthes Watson (1887: 457) are nested within the large genusAgave, thus renderingAgaveas traditionally circumscribed (=Agaves.str.) paraphyletic. The sole study in whichManfreda,PolianthesandProchnyanthes grouped separate from and not nested withinAgave is the molecular AFLP study of Gil-Vegaet al. (2007).
