QUESTION
What is the clinical course of conventionally treated acute lateral ankle sprains in adults?
REVIEW SCOPE
Included longitudinal studies of conventionally treated (ie, early mobilisation, sometimes combined with use of an external support) ankle sprains in adults.Outcomes included pain, re-sprains, subjective instability, and subjective recovery.
REVIEW METHODS
Medline, CINAHL, EMBASE/Excerpta Medica, PEDro, and Cochrane Controlled Trial register were searched. 31 studies were included, of which 24 had high-quality methods (scores ⩾5 out of 7, or ⩾8 out of 11 for studies of prognostic factors, on author-defined scales).
