Abstract

We establish the existence of the top quark using a67pb1 data sample ofp¯p collisions ats=1.8TeV collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF). Employing techniques similar to those we previously published, we observe a signal consistent withtt¯ decay toWWbb¯, but inconsistent with the background prediction by4.8σ. Additional evidence for the top quark is provided by a peak in the reconstructed mass distribution. We measure the top quark mass to be176±8(stat)±10(syst)GeV/c2, and thett¯ production cross section to be6.82.4+3.6pb.
