Abstract
The primary goal of this article is to review literature regarding ergonomics in relation to small/micro-businesses and the disconnect between knowledge and actualization. The secondary goal is to guide readers through an advanced process of ergonomic analysis through an example case study. Inspiration for the literature review stems from the commonly found tendency of small business to underestimate, or are not conscious of, the benefits of preventative care inherent to ergonomics. Those businesses that are knowledgeable but have not implemented any controls often cite the lack of capital required to effectively improve their operations. Using tools such as maxQDA, Vincinitas, Harzing’s analysis, and CiteSpace to discover different sources of research helps establish a better understanding of the literature as a whole. The literature review conducted discovered many people, researchers, and organizations who are still trying to create innovations and that engagement in this area is rising. Using human digital modeling software such as RAMSIS can help alleviate this burden of capital restriction instead of costly trial and error. To help guide others through the process of adjusting rendered objects, the individual steps to accomplish this analysis and comparisons are discussed in detail. Through an example case study boundary manikins created for an excavator cabin needed significant adjustments to the steering column, seat, and touch screen for comfortable operation. Using a tool like RAMSIS allows designers/managers to save time and money by virtually interfacing with the design space to prototype different scenarios and configurations. Understanding the impact design decisions have on worker comfort and strain can help managers be more proactive with preventative care without expensive and time-consuming analyses.
