Abstract
In previous writings about Spinoza’s Biblical criticism, I have stressed the connection of some of Spinoza’s central points with those presented by Isaac La Peyrère in hisPrae-Adamitae of 1655 (Popkin, 1974, 1976, 1979, 1973, 1978). La Peyrère had denied the Mosaic authorship of the Pentateuch, the accuracy of the existing Biblical texts, and the Biblical claim that everybody is descended from Adam. La Peyrère’s book was published in Amsterdam in five editions in 1655, was denounced far and wide and its author arrested in 1656 in Brussels.
