Activity chooser

From MoodleDocs

What is the activity chooser?

The activity chooser appears when Edit mode is on, and you click either the link Add an activity or resource at the bottom of each section or you click anywhere on the course page where you want to add your item. Watch the videoWhat is the activity chooser? to see it in action.

The activity chooser appears like a modal window on top of your course page. It contains all available activity types you can add to your course.

Icon colours and activity categories

The activity icons are coloured according to the activity category they belong to. Activities in Moodle are organised in categories, based on their main purpose in the course.

Activity categories are coloured as follows:

  • Pink = Assessment: Assignment, Quiz, and Workshop.
  • Purple = Collaboration: Database, Forum, Glossary, and Wiki.
  • Orange = Communication: BigBlueButton, Chat, Choice, Feedback, and Survey.
  • Brown = Interactive content: H5P, Lesson, IMS package, and SCORM package.
  • Teal = Resources: Book, File, Folder, Page, URL, and Text and media area.

New activity icons in Moodle 4.4

Each item has a star icon, for favouriting, and an information icon leading to more information and documentation.

Under each activity icon in the activity chooser, there's a star icon to favourite the activity, and an information icon to learn more about it

The activity chooser has tabs for different views. Which tabs you see depend on the administrator's settings (see Admin settings below) and can include:

  • Starred - any activity or resource you (the teacher) star as a favourite or frequently used activity
  • All - allActivities andResources together
  • Activities - onlyActivities
  • Resources - onlyResources
  • Recommended - items the administrator has chosen inSite administration > Courses > Activity chooser > Recommended activities

MoodleNet

If the administrator has enabled integration withMoodleNet then optionally a link to MoodleNet can be added to the footer of the activity chooser by selecting MoodleNet from Site administration > Courses > Activity chooser settings.

Admin settings

  • FromSite administration > Courses >Activity chooser > Activity chooser settings, the administrator can define the default tabs for the activity chooser in courses. (Starred activities always appear first.)

The admin can make the Recommended tab appear first in the activity chooser if desired (after the starred tab if present.) In new installations, Recommended is the default tab.
