Summarize log entries with Gemini assistance

This document describes how you can useGemini Cloud Assist,a key product in the Gemini for Google Cloud portfolio, to summarize alog entry in Cloud Logging. When you are investigating an issue, log entrysummaries can help you to interpret activity in a log.

This documentation assumes that your Google Cloud project alreadycollects the log data that you want to explore.

Before you begin

  1. Ensure that Gemini Cloud Assist is set up for your Google Cloud user account and project.

  2. In the Google Cloud console, on the project selector page, selectyour Google Cloud project.

Summarize a log entry

As an early-stage technology, Gemini for Google Cloud products can generate output that seems plausible but is factually incorrect. We recommend that you validate all output from Gemini for Google Cloud products before you use it. For more information, seeGemini for Google Cloud and responsible AI.

Logging only sends the text of a log entry toGemini Cloud Assist, so responses are based only on that textand don't include context from other log entries or other resources in yourGoogle Cloud project.

To summarize a log entry, do the following:

  1. In the Google Cloud console, go to theLogs Explorer page:

    Go toLogs Explorer

    If you use the search bar to find this page, then select the result whose subheading isLogging.

  2. Find the log entry that you want to review. To find a specific log entry,try the following:

    • Specify criteria that the log entries must match by selecting fromthe menus or by writing aquery.
    • Adjust the time range by using the time range picker.

    • Select the projects and log views that are searched for log data.

      The projects and log views in the default log scope areautomatically searched for log data. However, you canspecify which projects and log views are searched.

  3. Select the log entry that you want to summarize.

  4. In the toolbar for the log entry, clickExplain this log entry.

    Cloud Logging sends the text of the log entry toGemini Cloud Assist with a prompt to summarize thecontents of the log entry.Gemini Cloud Assist responds with a generated summary in theGemini pane. The summary is based only on thetext of the log entry without any additional context.
