Synopsis[]
Tater tries to conquer the great outdoors, or her backyard.
Plot[]
Tater has a rough awakening and comes downstairs to voice her frustrations to Nellie about her overcrowded sleeping arrangements. When Cousin Bud comes in looking relaxed, Tater asks him how he slept so well. He explains that unlike the others, he sleeps outside as he feels that nature provides for him. Tater comes to the conclusion that she too will sleep outdoors and live off the land. Nellie, to her surprise, is actually supportive of this idea and allows her to do so. However, this turns out to be a facade so that Nellie could auction to the other primos the chance to sleep in Tater's bed for money.
Right away, Tater is accosted by the outdoors with the hot sidewalk, the gravely ground, and the constant ant bites. She goes looking for shade, which constantly moves, accidentally scares a three legged dog away, and gets attacked by wasps when she goes for a guava. Cousin Bud comes to her rescue and reveals some of the methods he uses to stay outside. He explains to Tater that he doesn't control nature, he simply learns to live alongside it peacefully. With his help, Tater grows an appreciation for the outdoors, making friends with the various outdoor creatures and building herself proper shade so that she can stay cool. For once, Cousin Bud decides to try sleeping at Buela's house.
At night, Tater still has trouble sleeping due to the outdoor noises, but then remembers Cousin Bud's method and begins listening. She happens upon the dog from earlier, now with her head stuck in a wheel, and using the methods, manages to help the puppy by freeing and feeding her. In the morning, Tater is greeted by Cousin Bud with breakfast. While she enjoyed her night, she was concerned for the dog who has seemingly disappeared. However, the dog returns with more of her canine friends and Tater happily feels like she has accomplished the great outdoors. Back inside the house, the primos are upset that Tater's bed is not so great, embarrassing Nellie.
