Milele, commonly known as thePride Lands, is a savanna that is located inAfrica.

Milele is featured in the2019 live-action remake ofThe Lion King and its prequel, and sequel,Mufasa: The Lion King.

Background[]

Initially, the Pride Lands was known as "Milele". Many animals from surrounding territories regarded Milele as a mythical paradise in which there was plenty of food and water.

As a cub,Mufasa was told of Milele by his parents,Masego andAfia. Upon reaching adolescence, he set out in search of it alongside several companions. Eventually, the group reached Milele, only to be attacked by a hostile pride of lions known as the Outsiders. In a desperate bid for help, Mufasa rallied the animals of Milele to his cause, and they worked together to defeat the invaders. During the battle, an earthquake shook the land, forming the rock formation that would eventually be known as Pride Rock.

After the battle, the animals of Milele hailed Mufasa as their king, despite his protests. With some encouragement fromRafiki, he accepted the mantle of kingship and ascended the newly formed Pride Rock, where he roared to signify his position as king.

Many years later, Mufasa became one of the most well-respected and noteworthy kings to have ever ruled the Pride Lands. By Mufasa and his queen,Sarabi, came their only cub,Simba. Mufasa's younger brother,Scar, was notoriously envious of his elder brother, even implied to have fought Mufasa for the throne at one point. However, he then sought to usurp the throne through means of regicide. Scar succeeded in killing Mufasa and placed the blame on Simba, who was subsequently banished from the pride as punishment for his "crimes". Years later, Simba would learn the truth of his father's death and returns to Pride Rock to reclaim his throne. Scar's confession to killing Mufasa led to his downfall and he was overthrown, and the kingdom has since been ruled by Simba and his queen,Nala. The reigning monarch of the Pride Lands is ably assisted by their majordomo (currentlyZazu, a hornbill) and their Royal Mjuzi (currently Rafiki, a mandrill).

The land is governed under the philosophy that is the "Circle of Life"—the belief that all life plays a vital role in the ecosystem, a system that must maintain balance to prevent catastrophic consequences. Hyenas have commonly been known to disregard the Circle of Life by over-eating and over-hunting, leading to their eventual banishment to the Elephant Graveyard.

Places of Interest[]

Several locations in Milele are featured in parts of the film or play a part in the plot.

  • Pride Rock: A giant rock formation that is home to the pride of lions that rules over the Milele. Animals will gather here periodically for the presentation of the future ruler. It serves as the center of rule for the pride of lions.
  • Elephant Graveyard: The home of the hyenas where the sun never shines, it is littered with elephant remains. It also has numerous geysers which go off periodically. Technically, this area is beyond the borders of Milele even though it is surrounded by Milele.
  • Gorge: A deep canyon located at the edge of Milele.
  • Mount Kilimanjaro: The highest mountain in Milele. A herd of elephants and other animals can be seen walking past it during the "Circle of Life" sequence at the beginning of the original film.
  • Rafiki's Ancient Tree: The home of Rafiki.
