Element: animationend event

Baseline Widely available

This feature is well established and works across many devices and browser versions. It’s been available across browsers since ⁨December 2019⁩.

Theanimationend event is fired when aCSS Animation has completed. If the animation aborts before reaching completion, such as if the element is removed from the DOM or the animation is removed from the element, theanimationend event is not fired.

Syntax

Use the event name in methods likeaddEventListener(), or set an event handler property.

js
addEventListener("animationend", (event) => { })onanimationend = (event) => { }

Event type

AnAnimationEvent. Inherits fromEvent.

Event AnimationEvent

Event properties

Also inherits properties from its parentEvent.

AnimationEvent.animationNameRead only

A string containing the value of theanimation-name that generated the animation.

AnimationEvent.elapsedTimeRead only

Afloat giving the amount of time the animation has been running, in seconds, when this event fired, excluding any time the animation was paused. For ananimationstart event,elapsedTime is0.0 unless there was a negative value foranimation-delay, in which case the event will be fired withelapsedTime containing(-1 * delay).

AnimationEvent.pseudoElementRead only

A string, starting with'::', containing the name of thepseudo-element the animation runs on. If the animation doesn't run on a pseudo-element but on the element, an empty string:''.

Examples

This example gets an element that's being animated and listens for theanimationend event:

js
const animated = document.querySelector(".animated");animated.addEventListener("animationend", () => {  console.log("Animation ended");});

The same, but using theonanimationend event handler property:

js
const animated = document.querySelector(".animated");animated.onanimationend = () => {  console.log("Animation ended");};
