Multitasking and parallelism | PART 1

Multitasking and parallelism are related but distinct concepts often used in computing and programming. Here's a clear differentiation:

Multitasking

Definition: Multitasking refers to the ability of a system to handle multiple tasks (processes or threads) seemingly at the same time by quickly switching between them.

How It Works:

Tasks share the same CPU or resource.

The operating system uses time slicing to switch between tasks so quickly that it appears they are running simultaneously.

Example: A user can browse the web while listening to music on the same computer. The CPU alternates between tasks like fetching webpage data and processing audio playback.

Key Points:

Not truly simultaneous; it's more about context switching.

Useful in single-core systems or environments.

Parallelism

Definition: Parallelism is the simultaneous execution of multiple tasks, often on multiple CPUs or cores.

How It Works:

Tasks are distributed across multiple processors or threads running concurrently.

Achieved in systems with multicore CPUs or distributed computing environments.

Example: A large dataset is divided, and different parts of it are processed simultaneously by different cores in a CPU.

Key Points:

True simultaneous execution.

Requires hardware support for multiple cores or processors

Conclusion

Multitasking improves responsiveness by efficiently managing resources.

Parallelism improves speed by leveraging hardware capabilities for true concurrency.

Both are important in modern computing, but their application depends on the use case and system capabilities.
