“Is Ed even inCowboy Bebop?!”

One of the biggest concernsCowboy Bebop mega-fans have had going into Netflix’s live action version is how the show would handle one of the anime’s most beloved characters. Radical Edward, or just plain Ed, is a tween girl who just so happens to be a ruthlessly brilliant hacker. Ed joins theBebop crew about a third of the way through the original series and immediately becomes part of Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine, and Ein’s chosen family.

She’s as iconic a character as her fellow Bebop crewmates, but so far Ed hasn’t been spotted in any teasers, first look photos, or press releases for the Netflix show. We know thatJohn Cho is playing Spike Spiegel,Mustafa Shakir is Jet Black, and thatDaniella Pineda is our live action Faye. Wither Ed? Did Netflix just decide to completely cut out the most fabulous hacker in the galaxy? Or is Ed’s appearance a surprise for stalwartCowboy Bebop fans?

IS ED IN NETFLIX’sCOWBOY BEBOP? ARE THERE RADICAL EDWARD EASTER EGGS INCOWBOY BEBOP?

Short answer: yes and yes.

The first inkling we get that Radical Edward exists in Netflix’s live actionCowboy Bebop is in Episode 6 “Binary Two-Step.” Jet gets a lead from the hacker Radical Edward that turns out to be not only a dud, but also a trap, leading Spike straight into the clutches of a rogue A.I. system. Both Jet and Spike are angry at Edward, whom they both presume is a grown man.

Ed finally appears in the final scene ofCowboy Bebop Season 1. After being betrayed by Julia (Elena Satine), cast off by Jet, and left behind by Faye, a bruised and battered Spike collapses outside of a Dive Bar. He seems to want to die, but then is coaxed away by a loud child’s braying voice calling his name. A goggle-donning Ed is in Spike’s face telling him he’s got to wake up. She’s got a big bounty for him: Volaju. Spike just wants Ed to shut up.

Ed is played by actor Eden Perkins, a newcomer who identifies as they/them. It’s still unclear if the live action show will make Ed non-binary as well.

It’s perhaps noting that Ed seems to already be buddies with Ein. The butterfly man they mention? Volaju? Well, Vincent Volaju is actually the main antagonist from theCowboy Bebop animated movie. So it seems like Netflix is hoping to build aCowboy Bebop Season 2 around the plot of that film.
