Nach seinem Studium in London beiJohn Hunter wurde er 1783 Chirurg imWestminster Hospital und blieb dort für 47 Jahre. Als er 1800 zusammen mitWilliam Nicholson die Experimente vonAlessandro Volta wiederholte, entdeckten beide zufällig dieElektrolyse.^[1]
