Syracuse (4-2) had seven players score in double figures and defeated Chaminade (1-5), 105-56, in the final day of the Maui Invitational on Wednesday.
Sophomore forwardsChris Bell andJustin Taylor led the way with 18 and 14 points, respectively. Junior centerNaheem McLeod and redshirt sophomore guardKyle Cuffe Jr. each had their season-best efforts with 13 points, sophomore guardJ.J. Starling and sophomore centerMaliq Brown contributed 12 points apiece and sophomore swingmanQuadir Copeland added 10 points.
Syracuse topped 100 points for the first time since Dec. 12, 2020, when the Orange totaled 101 in a win against Boston College.The seven players in double figures was the top showing since the Orange had eight in a Dec. 19, 2016 victory against Eastern Michigan.
WHEN THE GAME WAS DECIDED
The Orange strung together a nine-point run in the first 4:30 and never lost the lead. The stretch was sparked by seven points from Bell and it pushed the Syracuse lead to double-digits, 14-3. The Orange added 11 unanswered points which increased the early advantage to 27-7.
ORANGE CRUSH IT
Syracuse totaled 52 first-half points, thanks in part to a 23-of-40 (.575) shooting effort from the field. The Orange were effective in the paint, scoring 30 from inside in the first half. The Orange held the Silverswords to just 18 points in the beginning period and closed out the first half with a 15-2 run which sent them into the break with a 52-18 lead.
The Orange posted similar numbers in the second half, connecting on 21-of-38 (.553) from the field, including an 8-of-16 showing on 3-point attempts. Syracuse posted 53 points over the final 20 minutes of play.
KEEPING THEIR BALANCE
In addition to having seven players score in double digits, the Orange had 10 players contribute points. Reserve guardNiko Ruffin converted a 3-pointer for his firsrt basket of the season. Copeland had eight assists and the starting backcourt of Starling and sophomoreJudah Mintz each contributed five assists to Syracuse's total of 23.
The Orange outrebounded Chaminade 55-30 and 10 players had at least one board. Taylor posted his first double-double by pairing 10 rebounds with his 14 points. Copeland and McLeod each had nine boards while Bell and Starling had five each.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
Syracuse returns to the JMA Wireless Dome on November 28 for its next matchup against Louisiana State University for the ACC/SEC Challenge. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPN2.
