Kunāl joined CPJ in 2018 as India Correspondent and later served as India Representative. He
is currently CPJ’s Asia-Pacific Program Coordinator. A journalist since 2006, Kunāl has held
editorial leadership roles at Tehelka, Rajasthan Patrika, and The Indian Express, and has
received journalism honors including the Statesman Award for Rural Reporting and the UNFPA-
Laadli Award for Gender Sensitivity. His work at CPJ has also been recognized internationally,
earning him a Knight-Wallace Fellowship at the University of Michigan (2024–25) and selection
for the European Union Visitors’ Programme in 2022. A graduate of Jamia Millia Islamia, New
Delhi, and Sciences Po, Paris, Kunāl holds an MA in Journalism and a BA (Honors) in English
Literature, Political Science, and History. He speaks English, Bengali, and Hindi. Check out his
