TheIron Cross is considered to be thePrussian national symbol, dating back to the freedom war againstNapoleon. It was used as the symbol of theMilitary of Germany, as well as a German military decoration. As a decoration it is only awarded in times of war (to this date there are crosses from 1813, 1870, 1914, 1939).
