Volksdeutsche were people that Nazi Germany considered to be Germans even though they did not live in Germany and in some cases whose families had lived in other countries for a number of generations. The Nazis pursued a policy of uprooting and ultimately killing large numbers of Jewish and non-Jewish Poles and bringing in the Volkdeutsche to settle on the vacated lands and towns. The plan to resettle the Volkdeutsche was part the reason why the Nazis agreed to the Nazi-Soviet Pact in 1939 which allowed the Soviets to occupy large areas of eastern Europe where the Volksdeutsche lived.
