How we are funded

On Nov. 15, 2023, The Colorado Sun became a 501(c)3 nonprofit. Prior, we were a public benefit corporation, which meant we were a for-profit company incorporated with a mission to provide our community with quality, nonpartisan journalism — without a paywall. While our business model changed, our mission remains focused on serving Colorado with trustworthy information. You can peruse our annual reports here to see how we’ve grown and the impacts of our journalism over the years:2019,2020/2021,2022,2023)

The majority of The Sun’s funding comes directly from readers through donations and individual grants with additional revenue from sponsorships, events and foundation grants. The Colorado Sun makes news judgments that aren’t based on or influenced by donors or any revenue source. If you’d like to learn more about who funds The Sun, please see ourrecognition page. More on how we accept funding and our transparency rules can be found in ourethics policy.

Every dollar we raise directly powers The Sun’s mission of serving free, high-quality journalism to people who care about Colorado. That’s our promise to our readers — along with striving to make sure each and every one of our stories are worth your time.

Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion

The Colorado Sun is committed to the work of fighting racism, bigotry and exclusion, and to promoting a more just and equitable world. Readour statement codifying that commitment, which includes actionable goals to hold us accountable.

SunLit

Through a feature we call SunLit, done in partnership with Colorado Humanities & Center for the Book, The Colorado Sun will present current excerpts of works from some of the best Colorado fiction and nonfiction writers — always for free. We offer these literary appetizers, as well as author Q&As to lend context to the selections, as part of our mission to reinforce our shared sense of community, and to perhaps introduce readers to a new favorite writer.

Opinion columns

The Colorado Sun is a nonpartisan news organization, and the opinions of columnists and editorial writers do not reflect the opinions of the newsroom.

We label opinion pieces (including cartoons) prominently, using the clearest words possible to note that they are separate from news coverage. This includes when we post links to opinion pieces on social media accounts.

For more on how we will handle opinion pieces, seeour ethics policy.

If you are interested in sending a guest column to be considered for publication, check out our submission guidelines. Submissions must be 800 words or less and should be sent to opinion@coloradosun.com.
