Something incredible is happening at the global box office right now; Disney'sZootopia 2 is shattering projections to deliver one of the biggest extended openings in cinema history. Aiding the animated sequel in its quest to destroy records is China, a country that has been visibly cold on Hollywood movies in the last five years. As things stand, however,Zootopia 2 has a chance of beatingAvengers: Endgame in the Middle Kingdom, which isn't something that anybody could've seen coming. The film hasalready passed the $100 million mark at the worldwide box office before entering its first weekend of release, when revenue is expected to skyrocket even further.Zootopia 2 has also performed the much-needed job of turning things around for Disney after what has been a particularly bittersweet year.
Although the Mouse House is responsible for the only Hollywood movie to have crossed the coveted $1 billion mark at the global box office this year — theLilo & Stitch remake — it also delivered a handful of duds this year. Movies such asCaptain America: Brave New World,Thunderbolts*,Snow White,Elio,The Fantastic Four: First Steps, andTron: Ares have all underperformed to varying degrees.Zootopia 2 will pave the way forAvatar: Fire and Ash, which will presumably continue the positive momentum and deliver results worthy of its predecessors. Here's the running breakdown for the animated sequel:Zootopia 2 has grossed around $80 million in China, and another $80 million at the domestic box office.
The movie is currently eying around $160 million in its extended domestic debut, and as high as $200 million across five days in China. Adding in the revenue from other territories, the moviecould gross as much as $550 million globally by Sunday. This would put it on the top 10 list of the biggest openings in cinema history, ahead of films such asStar Wars: Episode VIII — The Last Jedi ($450 million),Captain Marvel ($456 million), andHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 ($483 million). The list is topped byEndgame, which grossed $1.2 billion in its global debut back in 2019.
