Access Cloud Storage buckets and files in JupyterLab

Vertex AI Workbench managed notebooks isdeprecated. On April 14, 2025, support for managed notebooks ended and the ability to create managed notebooks instances was removed. Existing instances will continue to function until March 30, 2026, but patches, updates, and upgrades won't be available. To continue using Vertex AI Workbench, we recommend that youmigrate your managed notebooks instances to Vertex AI Workbench instances.

This page shows you how to mount a Cloud Storage bucket to theJupyterLab interface ofyour Vertex AI Workbench managed notebooks instanceso that you can browse files that are storedin Cloud Storage. You can also open and edit files that are compatiblewith JupyterLab, such as text files and notebook (IPYNB) files.

Overview

Vertex AI Workbench managed notebooks instancesinclude a Cloud Storage integration that lets youmount a Cloud Storage bucket. This means you can browse the contentsof the bucket and work with compatible files from withinthe JupyterLab interface.

You can access any ofthe Cloud Storage buckets and files that your instancehas access to within the same project asyour managed notebooks instance.

Note: Your managed notebooks instance's access toCloud Storage is determined by the single user or service accountthat you used to grant access to your instance. For example,if you granted a specific service account access to your instance,you must also grant that service account access to theCloud Storage buckets that you want to use in JupyterLab.

Before you begin

This guide requires you to have access toat least one Cloud Storage bucket in the same projectas your managed notebooks instance.

Open JupyterLab

  1. In the Google Cloud console, go to theManaged notebooks page.

    Go to Managed notebooks

  2. Next to your managed notebooks instance's name,clickOpen JupyterLab.

Mount the Cloud Storage buckets and files

To mount and then access a Cloud Storage bucket, do the following:

  1. In JupyterLab, make sure the File Browser tabis selected.

  2. In the left sidebar, click the Mountshared storage button. If you don't see the button, drag the right sideof the sidebar to expand the sidebar until you see the button.

  3. In theBucket name field, enter the Cloud Storage bucket namethat you want to mount.

  4. ClickMount.

  5. Your Cloud Storage bucket appears as a folder in theFile browser tab of the left sidebar. Double-click the folder to openit and browse the contents.
