The Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) is a part of the ICANN multistakeholder community. The ccNSO was created in 2003 for and bycountry code top-level domain (ccTLD) managers to serve as a platform for ccTLDs to meet and discuss issues of concern to ccTLDs from a global perspective.

 

What Does the ccNSO Do?

  1. Develops Policies – It develops global policies within the scope of the ccNSO as stated in Annex C of the ICANN Bylaws, and recommends them to the ICANN Board. For example, retirement of ccTLDs.
  2. Provides a Platform for ccTLD Managers – It brings together ccTLD Managers from around the world to share their experiences, discuss topical issues, and coordinate efforts.
  3. Collaborates with Other Stakeholders – It works together with other stakeholders and communities within the ICANN structure.

How Is the Work of the ccNSO Organized?

The work of the ccNSO is organized into several key structures to ensure effective decision-making and collaboration among country code top-level domain (ccTLD) managers.

1. ccNSO Members


  • ccNSO membership is open to all ccTLD Managers, but joining is voluntary.
  • Members participate in policy discussions, working groups, and voting on key issues.

2. ccNSO Council


  • Ensures the daily operations of the ccNSO.
  • It has 15 elected members (3 from each of the 5 ICANN geographic regions) and 3 members appointed by the ICANN’s Nominating Committee (NomCom).
  • The Council determines the work and direction of the ccNSO based on the feedback from members, oversees the policy development processes, leads and participates in working groups, and represents ccTLD interests within ICANN.

  • A support team that helps with all the aspects of the work of the ccNSO.

5. ccNSO Participation in ICANN's Empowered Community


  • The ccNSO is aDecisional Participant in the Empowered Community (EC), which has oversight powers over ICANN.
  • It can approve or reject key ICANN decisions, such as budget changes or bylaw amendments.

1999

  • First exchange of letters between ICANN and ccTLDs
