Z-A Royale

TheZ-A Royale (Japanese:ZAロワイヤルZ-A Royale) is a competition held byQuasartico Inc. atnight inLumiose City to find the strongestMega Evolution user. Those who reach Rank A may have a wish granted by the company. Notable participants include theplayer andUrbain/Taunie.
Overview
ParticipatingPokémon Trainers start at Rank Z. By defeating other Trainers inPokémon battles inbattle zones and completingbonus cards found scattered throughout them, participants can earnTicket Points (Japanese:チケットポイントTicket Point). A participant can earn aChallenger's Ticket upon gathering enough Ticket Points, which allows them to take on apromotion match. Winning a promotion match increases the participant's rank. The number of points required to acquire a Challenger's Ticket increases as the player's rank increases. It is said that Trainers who reach Rank A may have one wish granted byQuasartico Inc., as long as it is within their capacity to do so.
It is revealed through the course ofPokémon Legends: Z-A thatAZ and Quasartico conceived of the Z-A Royale in order to find the strongest Mega Evolution user in Lumiose City. It was their belief that such a Trainer could use MegaFloette to controlAnge and prevent further spread ofMega Power throughout the city. To this end, Quasartico Inc. provides certain Trainers from Rank G and above withMega Rings in order for them to use Mega Evolution.
In the climax of the game, after both theplayer andUrbain/Taunie reach Rank A, they have a final battle to decide who's truly the strongest Mega Evolution user in Lumiose. The plan doesn't work regardless of who wins, causing Ange to trap Urbain/Taunie within it, absorb Floette, and becomeHyperrogue Ange Floette, covering the city in vines and causing many wild Pokémon to undergoRogue Mega Evolution. Thankfully, Ange was still stopped by the player alongside theLegendary PokémonZygarde, saving Lumiose from destruction.
Following the destruction of Ange, as both the player and Urbain/Taunie had reached Rank A, they can have one wish granted and they jointly wish for the Z-A Royale to continue, something that'd help everyone.Vinnie reveals that AZ also wished for this, hoping for Trainers to continue developing their skills alongside their Pokémon. As such, the Z-A Royale is transformed into theInfinite Z-A Royale. Changes include all Trainers being assigned Rank ∞, three battle zones at night instead of just one, and Challenger's Tickets now being used for reward matches at Quasartico, Inc. with various prizes.

Trivia
- The names of the first three promotion match opponents in all languages all start with the same letters as their ranks:Zach (Z),Yvon (Y), andXavi (X).
- The name of the Rank W promotion match opponent, Rintaro, breaks this trend in English, Japanese, and Chinese, but his names in French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Korean do start with the letter W. The association of Rintaro with Rank W is furthered by the fact that Rintaro is awaiter.
- Vinnie continues this trend again for one more rank, as he is battled while the player is at Rank V. However, Vinnie's rank itself is "???" and not Rank V, and his name only starts with V in English and German.
- Although Vinnie's rank is displayed as "???", it is internally identified in the game's code as Rank G.
- The names "Yvon" and "Xavi" may reference the names "Yvonne" and "Xavier", which are the pre-release names for thePokémon X and Y player charactersSerena andCalem, respectively.
- Yvonne is also the name ofSerena's counterpart inPokémon Adventures.
- At ranks F, E, and D, each promotion match Trainer has a subordinate who specializes in a type that is immune to their own type specialty. At rank C, this is reversed (withJacinthe andLebanne).
- These type specialties also extend to lower members of the following organizations which are led by their respective promotion match Trainers and subordinates:DYN4MO, theFist of Justice, theRust Syndicate, and theSBC.
