Xatu (Japanese:ネイティオNatio) is a dual-typePsychic/FlyingPokémon introduced inGeneration II.

Itevolves fromNatu starting atlevel 25.

Biology

Xatu with its wings unfolded

Xatu is a green,trogon-likePokémon with long, red-and-black tipped white wings that cover most of its front. Underneath its wings are designs that resemble red eyes. Along with its main green coloration, Xatu's design has accents of black, yellow, and red. There is an extra set of yellow stripes on a male Xatu. It has almond eyes, a long, slightly hooked beak, and two long, red feather crests. Xatu's feet have only two toes, one in front and one in back. Xatu's design is similar to atotem pole or akachina doll.

Xatu tends to stand still all day, constantly observing the sun's movement. One theory explains that Xatu can see into the future with its right eye and the past with its left, and it does not move due to fears of its visions of the future coming true. ThePokémon the Series episodeXatu the Future has shown that it can communicate by moving its wings in asemaphore fashion. Xatu is believed to live inthe forests ofSouth America.

Xatu stands motionless while staring at the sun. It's thought it does this to see into the future. However, when it's sleeping and broadly flapping its wings, it probably isn't seeing the future.

Trivia

Xatu's prototype design.
  • Xatu shares itscategory withFlygon. They are both known as the Mystic Pokémon in English and the Spirit Pokémon in Japanese.
  • Xatu's Silver, FireRed, and SoulSilverPokédex entries state that it is involved in South American myths, which is a connection between the Pokémon world andthe real world.
  • Xatu is one of the few Pokémon whose official art depicts its female form.
    • Before gender differences were introduced, all Xatu had the appearance of a female regardless of gender.
  • In thePokémon Gold and Silver Spaceworld '97 demo, Xatu andNatu were colored brown. Additionally, instead of stripes, the wings had circular patterns, it evolved via anEvolution stone, and its types were reversed.
  • Jeff Kalles, who assisted in the naming of manyGeneration II Pokémon, suggested the English name for Xatu. The name starting with the letter X arose fromNintendo andThe Pokémon Company's desire to have a Pokémon for every letter of the alphabet.[1][2][3]

Origin

Xatu seems to be based on aresplendent quetzal with design elements from aNative Americantotem orkachina. Behaviorally, it displays the ancient art of Sun Gazing, a form of spiritual meditation practiced by the Aztec and Mayan peoples in the belief that it would give them supernatural power (hence Xatu beingPsychic-type).

Xatu distinctly resembles the birdlike enemy in Stage 2 ofPulseman, as they both share a nearly identical color scheme and similar shape.

Name origin

Xatu is derived fromxat, a sort of Native American carved pole;[4] and possiblyNatu.

Natio may be a combination ofnative, ネイティNaty (Natu's Japanese name), andindio (Spanish and Italian for "Native American").
