Wimp Out (Japanese:にげごしBack Off) is anAbility introduced inGeneration VII. It is thesignature Ability ofWimpod.
Effect
In battle
When a Pokémon with Wimp Out takes damage that lowers itsHP below half of its maximum HP, it willflee (inwild battles) orswitch out (inTrainer battles). If the Pokémon's HP is already below half, Wimp Out cannot activate (unless the Pokémon first restores HP).
Wimp Out will not activate if the Pokémon's HP falls below half due to hurting itself inconfusion, but it will activate if the HP falls below half from all other damage (includingStruggle recoil). It does not activate when the Pokémon's HP is lowered by a means other than damage (such asPain Split, or cutting its own HP by usingSubstitute orBelly Drum orCurse). Wimp Out will not activate if the Pokémon's HP falls below half by a move affected bySheer Force.
It will activate only after the last hit ofmultistrike moves, even if the HP of the Pokémon with this Ability drops below half before the last hit. If this Ability activates due to being hit byU-turn orVolt Switch, the user of that move will not be switched out. This Ability will not activate if the Pokémon's HP falls below half while it is in the air during the semi-invulnerable turn ofSky Drop.
If the Pokémon falls below half HP and immediately consumes a Berry (such as aSitrus Berry) to restore its HP above half, Wimp Out does not activate; however, if it falls below half and recovers back above half from aShell Bell, Wimp Out will activate even after the Shell Bell recovery.
Trapping moves do not prevent Wimp Out from activating. Wimp Out will not activate in Trainer battles if the Pokémon with this Ability is its Trainer's only Pokémon left. Wimp Out will not activate on the player's Pokémon in wild battles duringtrials.
If the Pokémon with Wimp Out holds aRed Card orEject Button, the item activates first.Dragon Tail andCircle Throw switch out Pokémon before the Ability activates.
Outside of battle
Wimp Out has no effect outside of battle.
