Generation I

Prof. Oak

Professor Oak, who cannot normally be battled

Unused Trainer data forProf. Oak (Japanese:オーキドせんせいTeacher Ōkido) exists in allGeneration I games. His Japanese title differs from his title in the finished games:オーキドはかせDr. Ōkido.

Prof. Oak has data for three different teams using differentfirst partner Pokémon. Each team has five Pokémon: a level 66Tauros, a level 67Exeggutor, a level 68Arcanine, a level 70Gyarados, and one of the Kanto first partner Pokémon at level 69. This places his strength on par withBlue, who is thePokémon Champion and grandson of Professor Oak. Additionally, Exeggutor, Arcanine, and Gyarados are also Pokémon that Blue can use inPokémon Red and Blue except that they have a higher level. It is possible that he was meant to be a late-game opponent, perhaps in the same manner asRed inGeneration II. An email on the PC inProfessor Oak's Laboratory from theIndigo League (issuing a challenge to all Trainers and specifically requesting Oak to come visit them) may be seen as supporting this.

There are no preset dialogues for before Prof. Oak's battle or after defeating him.

Pokémon

These battles can be triggered in different ways.

  • By performing theDitto glitch using aPokémon with aSpecial stat of 226 if the wildDitto'sAttack is lowered by 4, 5, or 6 stages (each number of stages will yield a different team; in order: Charizard, Venusaur, or Blastoise).
  • By performing theOld man glitch with a player's name containing theMN character in the third, fifth or seventh slots, Professor Oak can be battled as aglitch Trainer; however, he will not have a defined roster.
  • By performing a specific select button glitch in the JapanesePokémon Red, Green, andBlue.

Chief

Chief

Chief[1] (Japanese:シルフのチーフSilph's Chief) is an unused Trainer class in the Generation I games. In the Japanese game data,チーフ (Chief) is also present in the list of shortened Trainer class names.

The Japanese name can also be found in unused text for theSafari Zone Area 2 rest house. This line was translated in Western localizations (but still unused) asSilph's manager.[2] In addition, aTeam Rocket Grunt in the unnamedGame Corner warehouse inCeladon City mentions Chief (チーフ) while bragging about their achievements.[3]

Chief has neither a defined sprite nor a programmedparty. When battled, his sprite appears as that of aScientist due to its Trainer class being directly after Chief in the game's data.

Chief can be battled using theDitto glitch and aPokémon with aSpecial stat of 227, or through the use of theold man glitch when the player's name contains a dash in the third, fifth, or seventh letter slot in EnglishPokémon Red and Blue.

Generation III

Archie and Maxie

Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire contain several unused Trainer parties, most notablyArchie andMaxie. Archie's team consists of a level 17Huntail and a level 17Sharpedo, while Maxie's consists of a level 17Torkoal and a level 17Camerupt; both have twoSuper Potions. In the final game, Archie never uses a Huntail and Maxie never uses a Torkoal, and their first encounters are at a higher level than these unused parties.

Pokémon Colosseum

Trainer Parties

Several level 100 Pokémon teams with blank movesets would have been used by theSnagem Head class, but go completely unused.

Rui

Rui interestingly has a Trainer headshot and model for standing behind Pokémon in battles, complete with an animation for losing. She might have been battled at one point in time.[4]

Generation IV

Barry

In the code of Pokémon Platinum, there exists a variation of Barry'sSurvival Area weekend battle team that is 10 levels higher than his initial weekend battle team, but it is completely inaccessible through normal gameplay. The levels of this team approximately match the levels of Barry's weekend battles from Diamond and Pearl after the player has entered the Hall of Fame 10 times.

Pokémon Center Trainers

In Pokémon Platinum, thePokémon Center trainers all have parties with lowLevel Pokémon within Platinum's data.[5] However, there is no possible way to encounter these, since they do not appear until the player obtains theVs. Seeker and they use their second parties listed in Platinum's data.
