Route 10 (Japanese:10番道路Route 10) is a route in northern Unova, connectingOpelucid City toVictory Road. Here, theplayerbattlesCheren once more. It is the final route before Victory Road and contains the Badge Check Gates. Each area between the gates represents the type that the Gym used.

In the two years beforePokémon Black 2 and White 2, a landslide occurred on the old Victory Road. As a precaution, the entrance to this route from Opelucid City was sealed off, effectively removing this route from the game. As a result, anew path to a newVictory Road exists, where the Badge Check Gates have been relocated.

Route description

Route 10 leads briefly north before turning east. There is a sign and tall grass north of this bend. The path continues eastwards up some stairs and then along a bridge. Due the height of this bridge above the water, players may notSurf from it. As the player crosses the bridge,Cheren will approach the player from the west and challenge them to a battle, wanting to prepare them for battling againstN.

After crossing the bridge, there is a narrow patch ofdark grass alongside a cliff. It leads north, then west before widening slightly and heading north, then west again. A bridge south of the dark grass which also cannot be surfed from leads to a maleVeteran who will give the player aDusk Stone. By heading east past the Veteran and south over a ledge, the player returns to the main path.

The route continues east past the bridge where the player fought Cheren between a cliff to the north and tall grass in the south before arriving at the Badge Check Gates. These lead toVictory Road and ultimately thePokémon League. Each area between the gates represents the type of the Gym eachBadge for that specific Badge Check Gate was obtained from.

Badge Check Gates

The Badge Check Gates are located in the northeast of this route. These gates lead toVictory Road. Each gate has something to do with the type specialized in by that Badge's Gym, which can be accessed after obtaining the corresponding Badge.

Different tracks are added to the background theme one by one as the player progresses through the Badge Check Gates, resulting in the complete Victory Road theme once the player arrives there.

Route 10 inPokémon Adventures
The Badge Check Gates in Pokémon Adventures

Black & White arc

Route 10 first appeared inDream a Little Dream, where the Trainers who had earned eightBadges went through the Badge Check Gates a day before the first part of thePokémon League tournament would begin atVictory Road.Black, who had failed to earn his eighth Badge yet, and was also depressed about hisMunna leaving him, was ready to give up, but seeing histeam, which shared his passionate dream of beating theChampion, he regained his passion and sought outDrayden at the Badge Check Gates. Since the deadline for earning eight Badges would technically only close when the League tournament itself began, Black demanded to battle Drayden for his Badge, which he accepted.

InHallway Hijinks, Black and Drayden had their battle in a corridor reserved for the event staff. Due to Drayden'sDruddigon being used to moving around in narrow caves, it had the advantage overBlack's Braviary in the similarly narrow corridor. When Braviary was on the brink of defeat, Black once again considered giving up. Unexpectedly,Elite Four memberCaitlin suddenly burst in and had herGothitelle mentally connect Black with theGym Leaders that had been captured byTeam Plasma. Thanks to their words of encouragement, Black regained his motivation and had Braviary useAir Slash on a door leading outside, blasting it open and letting in a gust of cold air that weakened Druddigon enough for Braviary to defeat it. As agreed, Drayden rewarded Black of his victory with theLegend Badge, allowing him to compete in the Pokémon League tournament.

InSomething Suspicious,Marlon revealed toWhite that theHood Man wasn't carrying the scent of the river flowing through the Trio Badge Gate, confirming that he had sneaked into the competition without the required eight Badges.

Trivia

  • Route 10 is the only place where one of the two rivers ofUnova is crossed and is not labeled as a bridge.
  • Although Route 10 no longer exists in Black 2 and White 2's story:
    • If theplayer uses acheating device to access this route by passing through the construction site, it only leads to a bunch of trees, and the background music forRoute 6 plays.
    • Its locationexists as leftover data in Black 2/White 2's files, as both games run on the same engine as their predecessors for compatibility reasons. Because of this, both games can be reverse-engineered to effectively restore Route 10 (as shown in thesetwoexamples), although data limitations prevent a perfect restoration, as most of Route's 10 original data was removed during Black 2/White 2's development.
  • Route 10's background music was remixed forSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. It can be heard in Wii U version on theKalos Pokémon League. The remix returns inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, and can play on any stage from the Pokémon series.
  • Unlike thePokémon League inGeneration IV, the Badge Check Gates on this route will check every Badge the player has obtained.
    • If theplayer attempts to access the gates viacheating without obtaining any Badges, the guard will not let them through the gates for the Badges they've not obtained yet, even though the route requires seven Badges to be legitimately be accessed. Thus, it is possible to have a guard refuse the player's entry at a gate before theLegend Badge Gate.
