Umbreon is amammalianPokémon which has a sleek, black body with four slender legs and crimson eyes. It has two pairs of pointed teeth (one pair in each jaw) which are visible when its mouth is open. It has long, pointed ears and a bushy tail, each with a yellow band around them. Its forehead and legs have yellow rings on them.
When agitated or angry, Umbreon protects itself by spraying poisonous sweat from its pores at its target's eyes. Its rings glow faintly but ominously when it is in the dark, excited, or pounces to attack, striking fear in the hearts of anyone nearby. They also glow on the night of a full moon, with the Moon's aura filling Umbreon with a mysterious power. ItsEvolution is the result ofEevee being exposed to moonlight, which altered its genetic structure. It silently hides in the dark with its black fur while waiting for its foes to make a move or hunting for food. It bides its time until its prey appears and lunges for its throat before eating it. Umbreon's large eyes allow it to see clearly in total darkness. It is rarein the wild and is more commonly found inurban areas under the ownership of otherPokémon Trainers. As mentioned inPokémon Sleep, it is known to be difficult to find while it sleeps during the night because it is nocturnal.[1]

In the1997 Nintendo Space World demo of Pokémon Gold and Silver, Umbreon was more purple in coloration and wasPoison-type. Remnants of this design stage can be seen in several of itsPokédex entries, which refer to it being capable of spraying poisonous sweat.
Origin
Similar to most Eeveelutions, Umbreon's overall design shares characteristics with multiple different mammalian species such asdogs, cats, andfoxes. According to Nishida, it did not have any particular motifs when it was created.[10]Umbreon seems to be a personification ofnighttime andnocturnal animals in general. As such, Umbreon'sDark type may be due to the night being traditionally seen as a dangerous, evil, and/or haunted time. Alternatively, it may be based on different superstitions and legends regarding the aforementioned mammals: foxes as cunning tricksters, black cats associated with bad luck and witchcraft, or theblack dog folkloric motif — a monstrous and vicious black dog with glowing red or yellow eyes.
Umbreon's black and golden coloring resembles Ancient Egypt animal sculptures of certain deities, such as cat statues ofBastet and jackal statues ofAnubis. Some notable examples are theGayer-Anderson cat and theAnubis Shrine. The Egyptian aesthetic may also point to theSet animal, an unknown creature (often represented as black canid) associated with chaotic elements.
The rings may be meant to resemble annularsolar eclipses. Although, given that it was originally Poison-type, Umbreon's rings and shiny coloration may have been loosely inspired by the highly venomousblue-ringed octopus or the broader concept ofaposematism.
Name origin
Umbreon may be a combination ofumbra (darkest part of a shadow; Latin forshadow) andeon (an immeasurably long period of time, possibly referring to how longevolution takes naturally).Eon is a suffix allEeveeEvolutions share and was Eevee's English prototype name.
Bracky may be a combination ofblack andlucky or 月tsuki (moon).
