An Ultra Wormhole

AnUltra Wormhole (Japanese:ウルトラホールUltra Hole) is a phenomenon appearing as adimensional rift that connects thePokémon world toUltra Space, allowing for interdimensional travel. Ultra Wormholes found in Ultra Space are known aswarp holes. Many Ultra Wormholes appear to naturally occur, however they may also be opened artificially by a Pokémon, such asCosmog. They are often accompanied by anUltra Beast, much to the surprise of unsuspecting bypassers. They were first discovered byProfessor Mohn.

Ultra Wormholes have been found inAlola andGalar in thecore series, in literature, and animated media. InPokémon Masters EX, Ultra Wormholes have also been opened in theregion ofPasio.

History and effects

Not much is known about what causes Ultra Wormholes to form, but they can occur naturally. TheNebula Pokémon,Cosmog, can open them while under heavy duress, at the cost of expending a lot of its energy, whereas its final evolved forms,Solgaleo andLunala, can open them more easily. According toLusamine, Cosmog can open multiple Ultra Wormholes more easily if the entire Pokémon's body was used. In Professor Mohn's research, overuse of this power can cause Cosmog todie.Necrozma has also been seen opening Ultra Wormholes, by fusing with either Solgaleo and Lunala and turning into Dusk Mane or Dawn Wings Necrozma, respectively. The different colored Ultra Wormholes found inUltra Space are called warp holes.

Prior to the events ofPokémon Sun, Moon,Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, Mohn had discovered and researched Ultra Wormholes and discovered theNihilego and Cosmog species. Mohn had eventually fallen into an Ultra Wormhole and had disappeared, leaving his whereabouts unknown until the plot of the games where he is found onPoké Pelago.Professor Burnet, who works atHeahea City, is a researcher of dimensions, and is also making research on Ultra Wormholes.Z-Power, a form of energy used to produceZ-Moves, comes from the energy produced by Ultra Wormholes.[1][2]

In Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, the player first encounters a dimensional rift in the sky atHeahea City after leaving the Dimensional Research Lab. The first functional Ultra Wormhole they encounter is on their first visit toAether Paradise, causing a then-unnamedNihilego to come from it and attack the player,Hau, andLusamine. This wormhole was created byFaba in Paradise's downstairs labs, using the gasses extracted fromNebby. Later, in Sun and Moon, multipleUltra Beasts enterAlola through a series of Ultra Wormholes crafted by Lusamine who forces Nebby to use its power, opening them across theregion. She andGuzma go through the Ultra Wormhole to travel toUltra Space. The player andLillie askNebby atPoni's Altar to take them through Ultra Space and create an Ultra Wormhole to see Lillie's mother.

In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Lusamine once again opens an Ultra Wormhole by using Nebby's powers, allowing her and Guzma to travel to whereNecrozma lies. At Poni's Altar, Necrozma comes through an Ultra Wormhole, dumping Lusamine and Guzma onto the altar's floor. After a fight with Nebby, Necrozma fuses with it and opens multiple Ultra Wormholes across the Alola region in an act similar to the events in Sun and Moon. Necrozma then escapes through another wormhole to get toUltra Megalopolis. The player rides anotherLunalaUS/SolgaleoUM into Ultra Space to go after Necrozma.

The player can travel through a dimensional rift at the top of theAltar of the SunneSUS/Altar of the MooneMUM, which takes them to the reverse world where the time of day is opposite to their original world and with the Altar of the Sunne or Moone and theLake of the SunneMUM/Lake of the MooneSUS replaced by their counterparts. They can only travel through this rift if they are theChampion and haveSolgaleo or Dusk ManeNecrozma in theparty atnight orLunala or Dawn WingsNecrozma during the day. In this parallel world, the rift is replaced by an Ultra Wormhole that the player can travel through at any time.

In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon only, the player is also able to travel through Ultra Wormholes by riding on the back of Solgaleo or Lunala. This feature is known asUltra Warp Ride. While traveling throughUltra Space, the player can encounter Ultra Wormholes that lead them to the worlds of individualUltra Beasts. They can also find warp holes that take them to locations that are light-years away that may containLegendary Pokémon.

After theLegendary Clue? has been obtained, Necrozma appears and opens up an Ultra Wormhole above theCrown Tundra, causing Dynamaxed Ultra Beasts to invade the Max Lair.

Fallers

Humans that have passed through an Ultra Wormhole, such asAnabel or theplayer inGeneration VII, have something changed about them, these individuals being labeled asFallers (Japanese:Fall(フォール)) by theInternational Police.[3] As a result of being exposed to large amounts of energy that pours from Ultra Wormholes, Ultra Beasts that find themselves in the same world as a Faller will relentlessly hunt them down, seemingly smelling or sensing the residual energy and coming to the conclusion an Ultra Wormhole awaits to take them home.[4] This residual energy appears to be the same type of energy thatTotem Pokémon[5] andZ-Moves[6] use,Z-Power. Because of a Faller's effective ability to lure Ultra Beasts, the International Police utilizes Fallers (typically without their knowledge) as bait to destroy the Ultra Beast. Examples of this include an unnamed female Faller who accompaniedLooker andNanu on a mission 10 years ago prior to the events ofPokémon Sun and Moon, before the duo had found Anabel. This event had led the woman into losing her life to the Ultra Beast.

During theLooker Episode, Anabel has been used to lure away each Ultra Beast during any given mission. Anabel eventually gets worn out and Looker misdirects her, in hopes of preventing the same disaster that happened 10 years prior. Aware of the scenario, Looker asked the player with help in catching the Ultra Beasts. After explaining the relationship that the International Police has with Fallers and UBs, Nanu confirms that both Anabel and the player are Fallers, having used Anabel as bait throughout the story.

While both Anabel and Mohn have experienced symptoms of amnesia after having passed through an Ultra Wormhole, it's unclear if there is any relation.

Trivia

  • According toJames Turner, the Ultra Wormholes were designed afterauroras, fractured glass, and scientific depictions ofblack holes andwormholes.[10][11]
  • Ultra Wormholes are similar to thespace-time distortions found inHisui:
    • Both phenomena are theorized to link between otherdimensions[12] andother worlds.[13]
    • Both phenomena are known to bring strong Pokémon from other locations. In the case of Ultra Wormholes, it is theUltra Beasts.
      • Both phenomena can also summon regular Pokémon from outside the current location.
    • Both phenomena are related toLegendary Pokémon. In the case of Ultra Wormholes, thelight trio and their evolutionary relatives.
    • Multiple characters who have gone through Ultra Wormholes or space-time distortions have had experienced memory loss.
