Ultra Space (Japanese:ウルトラスペースUltra Space) is aninterdimensional realm from where theLight trio may come, being accessible viaUltra Wormholes. It is connected to many other worlds such as thePokémon world and theUltra Beasts' homeworlds. Ultra Space and Ultra Wormholes were discovered and named byProfessor Mohn of theAether Foundation and are currently being researched byProfessor Burnet.

Geography

Ultra Space is aninterdimensional spatial realm filled with crystalline meteoroids and populated by members of theCosmog line. It links to a number of different worlds and dimensions through differently colored Ultra Wormholes called Warp Holes. While they may naturally occur, these wormholes are more commonly deliberately opened by Cosmog, itsevolutionary relativesSolgaleo andLunala; andNecrozma.

History

Background

In ancient times, Necrozma's light shone through the Ultra Wormholes connecting to various worlds such as theUltra Beasts' homeworlds,Ultra Megalopolis and thePokémon world, primarily over theAlolaregion. However, following an incident with the residents of Ultra Megalopolis in ancient years, Necrozma's body was damaged and it lost the ability to produce light, the agony caused by its injuries sending it into a berserk state where it constantly hungered for light. As a result, it was imprisoned inMegalo Tower.Professor Kukui theorizes that theSparkling Stones found across Alola and fashioned intoZ-Rings andZ-Power Rings are the lost pieces of Necrozma's body.

At one point in the past, a SolgaleoSUS/LunalaMUM arrived in Alola from Ultra Space and won a fight against theguardian deities. Solgaleo/Lunala bestowed theTapunium Z to the guardian deities, and in conjunction with a LunalaSUS/SolgaleoMUM produced severalCosmog that were revered by the region's monarchies and protected by the four tapu, before theLegendary Pokémon departed back to Ultra Space.

At another point in the past, Necrozma appeared in Alola and stole its light, covering the region in darkness. Necrozma clashed against theguardian deities, who fought to defend Alola. During that time, Necrozma also absorbed SolgaleoUS/LunalaUM to become its Dusk ManeUS/Dawn WingsUM form. With the assistance of a youth,Z-Crystals andSparkling Stones, the deities banished Necrozma, freed SolgaleoUS/LunalaUM and reclaimed Alola's light.

Prior to the events ofSun, Moon,Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Professor Mohn and the Aether Foundation had done research on Ultra Space, giving the location its name, and discovering what lies beyond Ultra Wormholes. He had discovered that Cosmog may be an Ultra Beast, due to its origins of Ultra Space.

Pokémon Sun and Moon

AsHau and theplayer visitedAether Paradise, an Ultra Wormhole opens in the facility and releases a Nihilego, that after its defeat, returns to Ultra Space. After the player reachesLusamine in Aether Paradise with Hau,Lillie,Gladion, andGuzma, she usesNebby's power to open countless Ultra Wormholes all overAlola to spreadUltra Beasts around the region. After she's defeated, she retreats into another Ultra Wormhole alongside Guzma as the wormholes started closing again. The player and Lillie, in order to save Guzma and Lusamine, formed another Ultra Wormhole with Nebby's help at theAltar of the SunneS/Altar of the MooneM after it evolved into aSolgaleoS/LunalaM. They found themselves in the Nihilego's homeworld,Ultra Deep Sea (referred to as Ultra Space) and after defeating Lusamine, who hadfused with a Nihilego, they all returned to Alola.

In the post-game, an Ultra Wormhole can still be found at the Altar of the SunneS/Altar of the MooneM and can be passed through to enter an alternate version of thePokémon world, specifically Alola, where it'll be nighttimeS/daytimeM instead, there the player can travel to theLake of the MooneS/Lake of the SunneM to obtain aCosmog through Nebby and aLunalaS/SolgaleoM from there. This world is known as the reverse world.

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon

Similarly to the previous games,Lusamine usedNebby to open anUltra Wormhole, but only one so she could reach Ultra Space and defeatNecrozma alongsideGuzma to protect their world. Theplayer andLillie also evolved Nebby intoSolgaleoUS/LunalaUM so they could rescue Lusamine and Guzma, however, before it could create an Ultra Wormhole, a new one appeared at the altar created by Necrozma, that threw Lusamine and Guzma out of it. After battling Nebby, Necrozmaabsorbed Nebby and became Dusk ManeUS/Dawn WingsUM Necrozma, creating countless Ultra Wormholes all over Alola, before being defeated and retreating to Ultra Space. Theplayer uses theUltra Recon Squad'sLunalaUS/SolgaleoUM to go after Necrozma in the squad's homeworld,Ultra Megalopolis, where the player defeats it, freeing Nebby and forcing it to retreat back to Alola.

Episode RR

Sometime after the main game,Team Rainbow Rocket uses theUltra Wormhole technology to travel toAlola from Ultra Space, this team is formed by previousvillainous team leaders from worlds where they were victorious in their plans. They built theirTeam Rocket's Castle inAether Paradise. After each of them were defeated,Colress uses the same technology to send them back to their worlds, excludingGiovanni, who leaves for another world on his own later.

Accessible worlds

In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, unlike in Sun and Moon, the player can travel through Ultra Space usingNebby orUltra Recon Squad'sLunalaUS/SolgaleoUM in theUltra Warp Ride through the Ultra Wormhole at the Altar of the SunneUS/Altar of the MooneUM and access several new Ultra Space worlds through the Warp Holes.

If aPikachu,Cubone, orExeggcute is evolved in Ultra Space, it will evolve into KantonianRaichu,Marowak, orExeggutor rather than their respectiveAlolan form. Despite the Ultra Ruin being an alternate version of Alola, Pikachu, Exeggcute and Cubone will still evolve into their Kanto counterparts as opposed to their Alolan forms.
