History

Young Ult

Pre-series

Ult grew up inLumiose City in theKalos region. At some point during his childhood, Ult received aDusk Ball fromhis father, though he was oblivious to what Pokémon was contained inside.

Due to unknown events, Ult ended up homeless and was forced to live out his days in the Lumiose City alleys alongside hisSableye. One day, a young detective namedEmma approached Ult and allowed him and Sableye a place to stay at her home, theLooker Bureau. During his stay, Emma taught Ult certain necessities, such as reading, writing, and how to study.

Pokémon Horizons: The Series

In the year following the events ofWhere the Adventure Leads, Ultmet andtrainedalongsideRoy in theKalosregion, which led to them becomingrivals, aquiringMega Rings, and masteringMega Evolution.

Ult andSableye

Ult debuted inEyes to the Skies Once Again, Part 1. He found Roy searching for awildSlaking and insisted on following him, despite the other's attempts of warding him off. Eventually, they found the Slaking and had their Pokémon battle and defeat it after discovering that it was being influenced byLaquium. In the following morning, Ult found out that Roy had woken up earlier and left him behind.

InFollowing Traces of Laquium, Ult tracked Roy down to an unknown town, discovering him withLiko. While continuing to follow them, he and hisSableye accidentally fell down a hole and investigated it, only to be caught by a Laquium-afflictedSteelix. Later, he found Roy and Liko fighting another afflicted Steelix. Seeing the severity of the situation, he Mega Evolved his Sableye and assisted the two in fighting the berserk Pokémon. After being introduced to Liko, his Sableye attempted to eatPagogo due to the gems it had, but Ult managed to pull it away. Ult chastised Roy for abandoning him in the forest, leading to Roy realizing that Ult had been following him, though he denied the accusation. He then began a monologue claiming that theBlack Rayquaza would be his, prompting Roy to drag Liko off, much to his frustration.

Ult renounces the power ofLaquium and destroys hisStrong Sphere

InThe Strong Sphere, Ult ended up in theExceed Testing Center nearMochew City, where a live demonstration of theStrong Sphere was being held. He encountered Liko and Roy, but coldly shrugged off Roy's attempt to talk to him due to the motion sickness resulting from having ridden the bus. Ult contemplated using the Strong Sphere at first, but quickly made up his mind to not use it after seeing the effects onCoral andSidian's Pokémon. He had his Sableye face off against them, but Coral'sGlalie wrapped the battle early with aSelf-Destruct, allowing Ult, Liko, and Roy to escape. Then, he decided to formally join the two of them on their journey.

InCrash! Team Dragon Rampage!, after learning fromDot about aBlack Rayquaza sighting nearBlackthorn City, the trio decided to go there and investigate. While on the way, they were stopped byTeam Dragon Rampage, a trio ofCyclizar-ridingDragon Tamers, who feigned ignorance about the Black Rayquaza and fled, accusing Ult's group of beingPokémon poachers. Later, the group encounteredSnake, an actual poacher. Ult tried facing the man alone, but was scolded by Liko, who stated his reckless actions would never allow him to become strong. Taking Liko's critique to heart, Ult teamed up with Roy and defeated Snake, sending him running off. Impressed by their heroics, Team Dragon Rampage decided to take Liko and Roy, but not Ult, to theDragon's Den, where the Black Rayquaza was recovering from the events atLaqua. Ult, however, insisted and found his way there, where he met theLegendary Pokémon for the first time and told it to get better quickly, as he only wanted to face it at full strength, while also proclaiming his intention of becoming way stronger.

Ult joining theRising Volt Tacklers

InOrla, Grounded, Ult, Liko, Roy, and Dot, who had joined them in theprevious episode, arrived atKarna's Poké Ball factory, inGalar, to meet up withOrla, a former member of theRising Volt Tacklers. While the others tried convincing Orla to aid them, Ult found out thatKarna had been hired to manufacture shells for the Strong Spheres, oblivious to what they truly were. TwoExceed employees came to pick up their order, but when Ult denied them, theExplorers membersIndi andRubina stepped in to take them by force. In thenext episode, Ult, Liko, Roy, and Dot teamed up to battle Indi and Rubina's Laquium-enhancedPaldeanTauros. By exploiting a weakness caused by the Laquium's effect, Ult and the others emerged victorious, forcing Indi and Rubina to retreat. Later, after Orla had been convinced to fly on the airship once again, Ult and the others pitched in to help clean and repair the Brave Olivine. Once they were done,Mollie,Murdock, andLudlow arrived to join as well. To everyone else's surprise, Ult proudly stated he would be joining the Rising Volt Tacklers as their newest member.

InThe Dusk Ball That Wouldn't Open, Ult got into an argument with Roy over the messy state of his living quarters. Frustrated, Ult ran away with Sableye toManpūku Town, where he metRayu, a street artist to whom he showed off hisDusk Ball, claiming it housed a powerful Pokémon, though he didn't know exactly who. The next day, Ult realized Rayu had stolen his Dusk Ball and raced to the town, where he found the boy ready to trade it for a Strong Sphere with Indi and Rubina. He challenged them to a battle and managed to win after his willingness to fight for others resonated with the Pokémon in the Dusk Ball, who finally emerged, revealing itself as aDragonite. The Explorers duo retreated, but Ult followed them. In thenext episode, he arrived at anExplorers base, but was quickly spotted and locked up. Fortunately, he managed to send Sableye away to get help, who was able to find Roy. The two of them soon fought against Indi and Rubina once more, but they were interrupted by fourRabsca, who were suppressing the battlefield with theirGravity. At this moment, remembering words fromhis father, he called for Dragonite's strength in order to protect the ones he cared about. This time, Ult's determination allowed for Dragonite to Mega Evolve, which took out the Rabsca, allowing the two boys to defeat their opponents and escape. While Roy was pleased to see that Dragonite approved him, Ult felt that it wasn't genuine until he could protect the ones he cared about. He later met with Mollie, who gave him some advice and knew he had run off but did not tell anyone, which he appreciated, and he warmed up at the thought of belonging with the group.

Ult and Lacey

InThe Six Heroes Unleashed!, Ult joined Liko and Roy in facing off against the Explorers once again, who empowered five of the Six Heroes with Super Strong Spheres which made them go berserk. Ult's Sableye struggled to deal significant damage toGouging Fire, leaving Ult shocked at the sheer strength of the Six Heroes. Ult then sent out and Mega-Evolved his Dragonite, but despite this Mega Dragonite still was not fully obedient to Ult, not listening to his commands and dodging Gouging Fire's attacks on its own. After Pagogo was defeated Ult and his friends had to face off against the berserk Six Heroes once again. In thenext episode, Ult and his friends continued struggling against the rampaging heroes. Despite the timely assistance byAmethio andZygarde, the battle still resulted in a complete defeat for the Rising Volt Tacklers. Exhausted, the effects of the Super Strong Spheres wore off on the Six Heroes, whose unconscious bodies were taken away by the Explorers. After bidding farewell to Amethio,Hamber, andCervantis, Ult and the others received a call fromBriar, who suggested that they come meet her atBlueberry Academy. Realizing that Blueberry Academy is a school that specializes in Pokémon battling, Ult and his friends decided it would be the perfect location to train for their next encounter with the Explorers.

InHZ117, Ult battled againstLacey with his Sableye, but lost the battle as well as failing her Pokémon knowledge quizzes. As a result of this loss, he went along to study Pokémon features and behavior to get better knowledge, struggling along the way. After seeingDrayton with his Dragonite, Ult opened up to Lacey about his own Dragonite and how his father gave it to him, with both Trainers bonding over their respective parents. After being attacked by an AlolanExeggutor, Ult followed Lacey's advice about observing Pokémon behavior in battle, working well with his Dragonite to defeat it. This victory resulted in Ult growing closer to his Pokémon as a result.

InHZ124, Ult and his friends infiltrated the Explorers HQ to rescue the remaining Six Heroes. Ult and Roy went up the roof but were caught by the grunts and battle them. After defeating them, Ult and Roy meet up with the girls and Amethio, as Dot was able to get them in by hacking the door. Ult and his friends then snuck into the HQ to rescue the remaining Six Heroes, only to be led into a trap set by Spinel, with Ult and his friends facing against each of the remaining Six Heroes and Explores Admins one on one.

InHZ125, Ult used his Dragonite to battle against Lucius's Gouging Fire. Ult's Dragonite held its own at first until it got knocked down by Gouging Fire's newly learned Ancient Power, catching Ult off guard as he did not expect Gouging Fire to know a Rock type move. Ult then Mega Evolved Dragonite in order to level the playing field. Although, Ult struggled to find details onPokédex Entry as aParadox Pokémon, he got an idea for a counter by having Mega Dragonite use a powerful Twister to send Gouging Fire'sAncient Power attacks back at it, eventually overwhelming and defeating it.

InHZ127, Ult used his Dragonite to battle against Hassel's Baxcalibur. Despite putting up a good fight, Ult failed to notice Hassel's tactics which left Dragonite trapped and frozen in ice, Baxcalibur then defeated Dragonite with Glaive Rush which lost Ult the battle.

Character

Ult and the Black Rayquaza

Ult isRoy's self-proclaimed spirited rival, constantly seeking a battle. He's quick with a snarky comment and easily frustrated, especially when Roy leaves him behind. Despite his arrogant demeanor and sharp tongue, Ult is actually a skilled Trainer with a strong connection to his Pokémon, enabling them toMega Evolve, as well as being good with battle tactics, as seen when battlingCoral andSidian on even footing without using Mega Evolution. He can also be surprisingly supportive, encouraging Roy to overcome his fears and fight for his ambitions. Driven by their shared goal of catching theBlack Rayquaza, Ult's impulsive pursuit often leads him into trouble, as seen when he angered a flock ofDodrio andFearow by trespassing, and also leads to him persistently pursuing Roy to the latter's displeasure. These traits lead to his relationship with Roy being tenuous, as the latter sees him as a nuisance and a liability who will only get in his way and generally doesn't want to put up with him and his over-the-top behavior, always taking any opportunity to escape from his persistent presence. Despite this, Ult does get along with Roy and considers him a close friend.

Ult and Diana

Ult is shown to be shy and easily flustered around people, having a hard time interacting with anyone as a result, but is comfortable around Pokémon. Although he can come out of his shell around men after he gets to know them, Ult mostly shows his shy side around women, as seen withEmma andLiko. His ineptitude at interacting with girls is displayed when Ult initially mistookDot for a boy untilMurdock explained that she is his niece, which caused Ult to freak out because he briefly held her hand before finding out. However, after the events inCrash! Team Dragon Rampage!, Ult became comfortable around Liko and developed an admiration for her compassion for Pokémon, even seeing her as a very good friend. Ult also became friends with Dot and gets along well with her. During the events inThe Dusk Ball That Wouldn't Open andFriends as Two, Me and You, Ult came to respectMollie, as she didn't tell their teammates about him running away and gave him some advice when he returned. Also, Ult quickly befriendedDiana, Liko's grandmother, after finding out that she used theBrave Olivine's observation deck as a room as well. All of these interactions show that his kind nature can effectively overtake his shyness towards women once a friendship or connection has been established with them. Although his relationship with Emma seems complicated, Ult does have some respect for her, as she took him in and taught him how to read and write.

Ult and his friends

At first, Ult had a hard time interacting with the older members of theRising Volt Tacklers, due to not knowing them well and not spending time around people. However, after getting to know the older members, Ult comes to see them as his friends and is on good terms with them. Although, Ult mostly hangs out Roy, Liko, and Dot, as his strong friendship with them is part of the reason hedecided to join the Rising Volt Tacklers. As time passed, Ult comes to enjoy being with the Rising Volt Tacklers and spends every chance he could to bond with his teammates. Upon meetingFriede formally inHZ122 and hearing his story as to how he went to space, Ult started to admire him greatly, even going to the point of calling him "Master Friede". Ult is also impressed that Friede can use Mega Evolution with two of his Pokémon like he can with his partners. Through his friendship with his teammates, Ult easily trusts their allies and friends, such asAmethio. Ult even comes to enjoy the freedom of flying the open sky with his friends and teammates.

Ult's time with the Rising Volt Tacklers has changed him for the better, but his tendency of wanting to battle and his desire to catch the Black Rayquaza has remained. He has also learned to be a team player and that true strength comes from protecting others, especially his friends. In addtion, Ult has come to understand that he can't do everything alone and he can relay on his friends for help. Ult is even mellowing out, becoming less arrogant, and to not rush into things, as seen inHZ119 andHZ120. His social skills has shown improvement, as he is overcoming his shyness around people and is interacting with others more. Ult has shown to be aware of his flaws and is determined to not only correct them, but to rise above them all.

Ult deep down prefers to battle all out with his Pokémon and is a kind person at heart, and seemingly has a strong moral code, disgusted by the use ofLaquium in battle and helping Roy and Liko battle theExplorers without hesitation. This is also shown when Ult tells the Black Rayquaza to get better soon, as he only wanted to battle it at full strength. Ult's good heart mainly shines through for his compassion and passion for Pokémon, although his adventures with the Rising Volt Tacklers has brought that part of himself out further for people.

Ever since the events inThe Strong Sphere, Ult developed a strong dislike towards the Explorers and the way they treat Pokémon. Ult's detest for the Explorers grows after finding out that they have takenLucius'sremaining five Pokémon captive and gets angry at himself for not doing something when he saw hisKleavor andLapras trapped in boxes inFriends as Two, Me and You, but isassured by his friends that his information is important for their mission. He is even able to see through the Explorers lies, as seen inOrla, Grounded andHZ125, due to not only seeing them for who they truly are, but also because of his friends and teammates stories about them.

Similar to Roy, Ult has shown to be rather gluttonous, which has caused him trouble before, like when hetried to eat all of the food inNaranja Academy despite it not being for him. Ult also enjoys Murodck's food, especially his sweets. As shown inThe Strong Sphere andThe Prankster, Ult suffers from a form of motion sickness, causing him to feel unwell when riding certain vehicles such as buses or boats. Because of this, he feels more confortable sleeping in the Brave Olivine's observation room where he can see the sky outside. Ult isn't afraid to try new things, as shown inRiding the Waves, when he decided to give surfing a try. While Ult puts up a strong front, he can be flustered or even intimidated by stronger opponents, as seen inThe Six Heroes Unleashed! where his Sableye was overpowered byLucius's Gouging Fire under the influence of aSuper Strong Sphere. After losing to five of the Six Heroes in thenext episode, Ult became depressed, but quickly shakes it off and became motivated to get stronger in order to help them.

Ult andEmma

Prior to the events of the series, Ult was given aDragonite in aDusk Ball byhis father. As the time passed, however, Dragonite seemed unwilling to come out, which Ult may have taken as a sign that it did not recognize his strength. Since then, his goal was to become stronger in order to win its approval. It was once he displayed willingness to fight for others when Dragonite reacted and finally appeared before him. Despite this progress, Ult was still unsure if Dragonite truly approved of him, so he made it his goal to become the strongest in order to protect everyone. Since then, Dragonite has obediently come out of its Ball when asked, however, it has atendency to act without its Trainer's commands. However, during the events inHZ117, Ult and Dragonite start to work out their issues.

Back inKalos when he and Roy had their first battle with each other, Ult is shown to be impatient and reckless in battling as he continously told his Sableye to use Power Gem repeatedly not noticing it's getting overwhelmed by overusing the attack ultimately causing them to lost. After some advice fromMaster Mayonnaise and a battle withCount Oyster andShōyu, he was able to battle effectively with his Sableye and trusts it more. However, he can still be prone to comedic outburst as observed inHZ116 when he refuses to acceptLacey's advice to observe a Pokémon first before approaching and battling, and in thenext episode constantly getting frustrated at getting all answers wrong in her quiz, while his Sableye takes damage from herExcadrill. Although, Ult does eventually take Lacey's advice, as he used it to battle an AlolanExeggutor. Ult even used hisPokédex to help him in his time of need, as seen inHZ125.
